Top Hazelnut Consumer Countries

The top hazelnut consuming countries are Italy, Turkey, Germany, France, Switzerland, Russia, Canada, Spain, Azerbaijan and Switzerland.

Hazelnut consumption in 2024 continues to be significant globally, with Italy maintaining a prominent position both as a producer and as a consumer.

Although domestic production was estimated at 87,000 tonnes, slightly down compared to 2023, domestic demand exceeds supply, generating a trade deficit and imports of hazelnuts from other countries.

Turkey, the world leader in hazelnut production, continues to be a major supplier to the Italian and international markets, with an estimated production of over 830,000 tons in 2023.

The United States, Chile, and Azerbaijan are other countries that have seen significant growth in hazelnut production, contributing to global supply.

In terms of consumption, the main hazelnut consuming countries include:

Italy: Domestic consumption is high, with strong demand for both direct consumption and industrial processing. Domestic production, although significant, is not enough to cover demand, leading to the import of hazelnuts from other countries.

United States: American consumers appreciate hazelnuts for their flavor and health benefits, contributing to a growing market.

Europe: Countries such as Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are important markets for hazelnuts, with growing demand for both direct consumption and the food industry.

Turkey: Despite being the largest producer, Turkey also has a significant domestic market for hazelnuts, which are used in various food and confectionery products.

These countries continue to play a crucial role in the global hazelnut market, influencing both production and prices.
