European Law for eMTBs

European law could cause problems for eMTBs (electric mountain bikes) due to regulations that classify them as motor vehicles rather than bicycles.
This classification means that eMTBs may be prohibited from certain trails and public roads where traditional bicycles are allowed.
For instance, the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management prohibit eMTBs on trails that allow mountain bikes, considering them “motor vehicles” alongside motorcycles and ATVs.
Additionally, France has banned the illegal tuning of eMTBs, imposing fines of up to âŹ30,000 and up to two years of imprisonment for individuals or retailers caught modifying an eMTB to exceed its maximum speed limit.
