Tokyo to Kyoto Bikepacking Adventure

“From Tokyo to Kyoto: A 9 Day Bikepacking Adventure Across JAPAN” is a 16-minute video that showcases a nine-day, 600-kilometer journey across Japan by bike, undertaken by partners Lea and Luca.
The video highlights their route from Tokyo to Kyoto, which includes scenic rides, challenging climbs, and cultural experiences such as onsen baths and traditional ryokan stays.
The journey begins with a 70-kilometer ride from Tokyo to Lake Yamanaka, followed by a circumnavigation of Mt. Fuji. The adventurers faced various weather conditions, including a cold and continuous downpour on the third day, which added to the adventure.
Lea and Luca adopted a “direction over speed” mindset, aiming to cover no more than 80 kilometers per day to fully enjoy the journey. They planned to reach their pre-booked accommodations every night, with a rest day in Nara on the seventh day.
Their equipment included bikes suited for the terrain, with Lea riding a Surly Cross-Check 700c steel frame and Luca riding a Kona Rove AL700 aluminum frame. They carried only essential items, such as bike tools, repair kits, and a single bike lock, and opted for a minimalist approach to packing.
The video also emphasizes the courteous behavior of Japanese drivers, who consistently created safe spaces when passing the cyclists, contributing to a sense of security throughout the journey.
Tokyo: The starting point of the journey, known for bustling districts like Shibuya.
